"Avon – Ms. Wood’s Science Club at Danville Community Middle School participated in storm drain marking on Tuesday, November 20.  With the help of Brooke Moore, Karin Starr, and Kim Bowman, members of the Hendricks County Clean Water Department, Ms. Wood and the 23 students managed to mark nearly 100 storm drains in the Forest Commons neighborhood in Avon.  The students also left door hangers on all of the surrounding homes explaining the purpose of their storm drain marking.  “We are not only educating the kids that are out here marking these drains, but we are making the community aware of simple things that they can do to promote the welfare of our waterways,”  says Brooke Moore, Education Coordinator.

Marking storm drains educates the community that storm drains lead to a local waterway and not a treatment plant like many believe.  The Danville Middle School Science Club and the Clean Water Department was able to provide local citizens with a better understanding of non-point source pollution and its effect on water quality.  Just a few examples of these non-point source pollutants are chemicals from fertilizers, soaps from car washing, and even runoff of pet waste. “We want the public to know not to dump things directly into storm drains and to be aware that things they have in their own yard can effect a waterway through a storm drain,” says Moore.   This group of students was excited to put the word out in the community and save their environment, one storm drain at a time.
If your group is interested in participating in storm drain marking, please contact Brooke Moore at 718-6103."
